An early read on the proposed amendments to the Egyptian Labor Code — severance, probation periods, and the scope of fixed-term contracts.
The 2026 parliamentary session has three employer-relevant amendments on the docket. While none are law yet, the draft text signals a clear policy direction: tighter fixed-term rules, shorter probation windows, and enhanced severance floors.
Fixed-term contracts
The current unlimited renewal of fixed-term contracts would be capped at two renewals or four cumulative years — whichever comes first. Employers should audit existing rolled-over contracts now.
Probation windows
Probation would be reduced from 90 to 60 days for non-managerial roles. Managerial contracts retain the 90-day allowance but with mandatory performance documentation at the 45-day mark.
